Gateway Zimbabwe is an associative formation of organizations working together on social cohesion and community engagement to contribute to re-weaving and enlivening the social fabric of Zimbabwe. Our aim is to help nurture healthy and sustainable communities. Gateway is an integrated set of program elements (multi-stakeholder convenings, leadership fellowship, and innovation) built upon a set of foundational design principles that enable and foster emergence and self-organization.
Summary of role
Building our storytelling, influencing campaigns, and creating content that increases engagement, the Communications associate is a core member of the learning and harvesting team. This person plays an important role in enhancing the visibility and understanding of Gateway Zimbabwe’s principles and theory of change through new ways of working and being in community. The role requires coordinating, implementing and managing work in media relations, brand management, digital communications, and influence campaigns.
A key responsibility is developing clear, compelling messages and content to be used across a variety of platforms, including digital channels, social media, internal and external publications, and for events and convenings. Other responsibilities include support in strategy development, media tracking (social and traditional media), social media management, and working closely with external vendors such as printers, journalists etc.
The Communications Associate reports to the Learning Lead and works closely with the Digital Content Creator and Programs Associate providing additional support where needed. With assistance from the Harvesting and Archiving Intern, the Communications Associate will keep detailed, updated reports of all official communication on Gateway Zimbabwe social media for reference.
Education, Experience and Skills
- A bachelor degree in Communications, Media Studies, Journalism or a related field;
- At least 3 years generalist communications experience for organization in public, private or social good space;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
- Excellent media relations skills and experience;
- Experience and/or familiarity with non-profit and public sectors, with deep awareness of current affairs, development and peacebuilding trends;
- Proven track record in managing plans and deadlines;
- Superb interpersonal skills and professional presence;
- A proven ability to think strategically, analyze critically, and to translate ideas and insights into action through coherent and viable communications and influence programs and plans

Strategic Ability: Ability to see opportunities, design innovative approaches backed by strong, analysis and planning. Strong sense for messaging, themes and techniques that resonate with the media in general;
Execution: Strong project management skills, deadline management, sense of responsibility and accountability and the ability to effectively multi-task;
Coordination: Ability to manage vendors to ensure timely, high-quality work product;
Partnership and Relationship Building: Strong professional representation of Gateway Zimbabwe, interpersonal relationship abilities, intercultural knowledge and appreciation, and strategic partnership building;
Integration: Ability to demonstrate inclusiveness, collaboration, respect and broad organizational interests;
Communication: Strong internal and external communications abilities; exceptional listening, written and verbal skills;
Mission-Driven: A thoughtful team member who works with integrity, always with a focus on Gateway Zimbabwe’s mission and vision which is to build and sustain healthy communities in order to reweave and enliven the social fabric of Zimbabwe.
