Action Aid Zimbabwe, under its Zimbabwe Agricultural Growth Programme (ZAGP) VALUE CHAIN ALLIANCE FOR LIVESTOCK UPGRADING AND EMPOWERMENT (VALUE) project seeks the services of a Consultant/s to develop breed standards for (F1, F2, F3 and F4) offspring coming from cross breeding exotic Boers Goats and Kalahari Reds with the indigenous Mashona and Matabele goats.

Key Deliverables

The consultant(s) will be expected to:

  • Develop Boer Goat (BG) and Kalahari Red (KR) crossbreds with each of the indigenous goats (Mashona and Matabele Goats) stretching from F1, F2, F3 and F4 cross breed standards which will include but not limited to general appearance and type, head, neck and forequarters, barrel, hindquarters, legs, skin and covering, sexual organs, quality, size, tail, pigmentation, horns, body characteristics, possible colour patterns, conformation etc.
  • The consultants will be expected to produce 16 standards {(BG x Mashona Goats F1, F2, F3, F4); (BG x Matabele Goats F1, F2, F3, F4); (KR x Mashona Goats F1, F2, F3, F4) and (KR x Matabele Goats F1, F2, F3, F4};
  • Produce two booklets of the crossbreeds (one for Boer and Mashona and Matabele Goats and another for Kalahari Red with Mashona and Matabele Goats) with descriptors, images, infographics, and illustrations.
  • The booklets should adequately capture the generations specified above;
  • Undergo video recording profiling each of the offspring and Develop charts with infographics which can be used as educative materials for farmers.
  • NB// Both the breed standards and booklets will be submitted to Ministry of Agriculture, Zimbabwe Herd Book (ZHB), and Goat Breeders Association of Zimbabwe (GBAZ) for review and the consultant should be prepared to address any questions arising.
  • The consultant should assist in organising meeting(s) with relevant authorities in which the standards will be presented and adopted by the stakeholders mentioned above.

Qualifications and Experience Required

The consultant or team must have the following experience and skills:

  • Over 10 years’ experience working on BG and KR;
  • Relevant educational qualifications;
  • At least three publications on Mashona, Matabele, BG and KR;
  • Experience of working in GVC in Zimbabwe;
  • Experience in working with various Government organizations, NGOs, Donors (USAID, DFID, EU, and UN Agencies) and as a technical resource person as well as consultant.

  • A financial proposal inclusive of all associated costs as shown on the TOR,
